The Buffalo Common Council is the legislative branch of the Buffalo city government, responsible for passing legislation, adopting the city's annual budget, and conducting investigations into city operations. Council members represent different districts and serve on committees such as finance and legislation, police oversight, and community development. The council aims to provide effective governance while promoting transparency, accountability, and equity in the affairs of the CIty of Buffalo.

Role Description

The Office of Council Majority Leader & Ellicott District Councilwoman Leah Halton-Pope is seeking an experienced and dynamic Chief of Staff to lead and manage day-to-day operations in a fast-paced, public service environment. This position serves as a senior advisor to the Councilmember, provides strategic counsel, and ensures the seamless coordination of legislative, administrative, and constituent services within the Ellicott District and across citywide initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the principal advisor to the Council Majority Leader on legislative priorities, policy development, and political strategy
  • Oversee daily operations of the Council office, including direct supervision of staff and interns
  • Coordinate and align internal workflows related to constituent services, communications, scheduling, and budget management
  • Act as a liaison to Common Council staff, City departments, community stakeholders, and government agencies
  • Develop strategic plans for community engagement, policy rollouts, and issue advocacy
  • Prepare briefings, talking points, correspondence, and legislative materials for the Councilmember
  • Manage special projects, crisis response, and high-level initiatives as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; an advanced degree in public policy, law, urban planning, or a related field is preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in government or public administration required
  • 10 or more years of directly related experience may be accepted in place of formal education
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Deep understanding of municipal government and community-centered governance
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, transparency, and public service
  • Must be a resident of the City of Buffalo ; residency in the Ellicott District is preferred but not required

Compensation & Benefits:

This position offers a competitive salary (above $80,000 annually) and a full benefits package, including health insurance, paid leave, and retirement contributions. The role is full-time and based in Buffalo, NY, with some evening and weekend availability required.
